The Highlands North Network

The Highlands North Network (HNN) serves as an umbrella organization for the rural  communities of northern Lanark Highlands Township, dedicated to advancing social health for  adults aged 55 and older. We provide shared resources, funding for supplies and equipment,  and coordination to sustain local activities and events. We also foster collaboration among  communities and strengthen the well-being and connectedness of Lanark Highlands residents.

HNN advocates for a future where social health and the people who make it possible are  recognized and compensated as vital parts of Canada’s healthcare system.

About SALC

The HNN currently receives funding for seniors' programs through the Government of Ontario's Seniors Active Living Centre (SALC) program.  This funding is targeted for social, cultural, learning and recreational programs for older adults that promote health, well-being and social connections.

In the fall of 2023, The Highlands North Network’s proposal to offer a new SALC program was accepted by the Province of Ontario and The Lanark Highlands-HNN SALC Program joined more than 300 SALC programs across the province. Programs may include:

  • arts and culture programs

  • book clubs

  • fitness centre and classes

  • health and wellness services

  • lifelong learning classes

  • multicultural social groups

  • recreation and leisure activities

  • special events

  • travel

The Lanark Highlands-HNN SALC Program focuses on social and recreational activities for the many retirees living in the rural and remote hamlets north of Lanark village. Most of the communities served by the halls are located a considerable distance from larger urban centers, increasing the significance of the halls for social gatherings.

Currently, five community hall committees and one sports centre offer SALC-supported activities and events in their venues. These include the Darling White Lake Centre, White Lake Sports Centre, Tatlock Hall, North Lavant Community Centre, South Lavant (Robertson Lake Hall), and Middleville Community Centre.

The funding provided by the Government of Ontario is used for supplies and equipment to support SALC activities and events  as well as to operate and promote the program.
