Middleville
Much like many of the community halls throughout the Lanark Highlands, Middleville Community Hall has a very interesting history. It was originally built in 1899, and although it looked a little different before the addition was added at the front and side where the ramp was installed, much of the original building remains intact. Did you know that before moving into the village, the Lanark Township office was in Middleville?
Middleville was once a booming place, with not only the township office but also a church, school, store and an inn! Looking back after all, it was the MIDDLE of Lanark Township! The Middleville Community Hall was originally built to function as the Lanark Township Office. The small back rooms upstairs that once stored the township's books and documents now house the building's furnace and store activity supplies. It's long gone now, but there was even a jail cell in the basement with bars on the windows and doors!
In May of 1982, the very first meeting of the Lanark Community Recreation Board was held; their purpose, to look after the operation of the hall. Forty-two years later and the Middleville Community Hall is still functioning with the help of a handful of community members who volunteer to keep this historic building thriving. Currently, there is Crokinole bi-weekly on Friday evenings at 7:30pm. The board is currently planning some future activities and we always welcome new ideas!
